Sprouted Code makes Visual Studio Code an effective and reliable platform for local and cloud-hosted AI models. It is built from Microsoft's open-source Visual Studio Code codebase. The initial release includes builds for Windows on x64 and ARM64, Linux on x64 and ARM64, and macOS on Apple Silicon.
The project grew out of practical bugs encountered while configuring open-weight, self-hosted, and independently managed AI endpoints. When GitHub Copilot is unavailable, these issues can hide model-management controls, block Chat during first-run setup, or disable independent models. The initial patchset addresses all discovered local AI setup and configuration bugs, and makes the IDE reliably work when using your own models.
Scope note: Sprouted Code focuses on editor-side fixes for model configuration and management so that Copilot doesn't get in the way of local model use. Universal AI protocol compatibility is a separate concern, being tackled by BreezyOps AgentBridge, now in private beta.
Sprouted Code gives useful Visual Studio Code patches somewhere to live, be used, tested, and improved. Generally useful patches are submitted to the upstream Visual Studio Code project.
