Heritage
Years ago, a dedicated Gentoo community member known as Pappy launched
kernel-seeds.org. His mission was simple but vital: to demystify the Linux
kernel, help users make sense of an overwhelmingly complex .config file, and
empower them to build their own kernels from the ground up. It was a project
rooted in the old-school hacker ethos of truly understanding your system.
When Pappy could no longer maintain the site, he passed the domain on to me. It has been waiting for its next chapter ever since.
Today, kernel-seeds.org is officially relaunching. While the scope is expanding, the core philosophy remains exactly the same. Kernel Seeds is now the incubator and home for open source projects with roots: foundational tools and technologies built with that same spirit of deep system mastery.
The site will serve as the launchpad for several major new initiatives:
- Keychain 3.x: A ground-up redesign of the venerable SSH-agent manager, modernized for today's workflows.
- Funtoo-ng components: The next-generation building blocks and architecture of the Funtoo ecosystem.
- Deep-tech tooling: Ongoing projects and components designed for users who want to pop the hood and tune the engine.
Pappy's original work was all about giving people a solid starting point: a seed to build something powerful. This relaunch honors that legacy. We are still planting seeds, just for a wider ecosystem of foundational Linux tools.
Welcome back to kernel-seeds.org.
